INDIA

Four months spent in India provided John Doubleday with an opportunity to work with the indigenous bronze casters of Chhattisghar and produce a body of new work.
The direct wax casting techniques used by the Bastar craftsmen are similar to those which John Doubleday has used since he started casting his work in bronze in the late 1960s. The accompanying photographs show some stages in the process. In particular he worked in close association with the highly skilled Jairam Bagel, who is shown in the photographs.
Whilst there he cast fourteen bronzes and brought back rather more as waxes to be cast in the UK.
As principal guest of the Ujjain International Art Festival, he had two exhibitions during his stay, which also provided him with an opportunity to set out his creative intentions.
